SOUGH, n. Phrenitis or inflammation of the brain in cattle. [sux]Sc. 1825 J. C. Loudon Encycl. Agric. 974:
Phrenzy fever, or inflammation of the brain, called also sough.

[Orig. uncertain. Poss. ad. M.L.Ger., Mid.Du. sucht, an illness, a fever, or < *soht, O.N. sótt, sickness, which has survived in n.Eng. dial. as sowt, soot, sheep rot, but historical evidence is lacking.]
