RUSHYROO, n. Also -raw (Peb. 1935, Per. 1968). The shrew, Sorex araneus.Sc. 1941 Scots Mag. (April) 23:
His own dialect word for a shrew — “a rushyroo”.

[One of the many corruptions, e.g. in Eng. dial. artish(r)ew, hardishrew, harvest-row, nursrow, etc., of Mid.Eng. erdshrew, earth-shrew. The y is an epenthetic vowel [ɪ] developed between sh and r. See S, letter, 6. (1) (v).]
