PANTOUF(F)LE, n. Also panduffle. A soft shoe for indoor wear, a slipper (Sc. 1818 Sawers Dict.; Gall. 1930, panduffle). Also fig. as in 1820 quot. In Sc. use in 15th c.. entering Eng. c.1570. Now only hist.Sc. 1820 Scott Abbot v.:
I have been too long the vassal of a pantoufle, and the slave of a silver whistle.
