NOTCH, n., v. Sc. usages: the act of cutting or making a notch; specif. in curling: a cut made in the ice to hold a player's foot when delivering the stone (Sc. 1890 J. Kerr Curling 161). See Natch, n.1, 1. Deriv. notcher, an assistant in a foundry (see quot.).Sc. 1927 Dict. Occupational Terms (H.M. S.O.) 127:
Notcher: twists the overlap of hot metal with pincers at ends of lap-welded tubes so that lap at end is criss-crossed.
