CHARLIE MUFTIE, n. comb. The whitethroat, Sylvia cinerea (Slg. 1885 C. Swainson Brit. Birds 23); so called “because its light-coloured head and neck feathers stand out more thickly than is usual in other birds” (Abd. 1846 W. Macgillivray Brit. Birds II. 354). Cf. Chairlie-muff, willow-wren, and Churr Muffit, with meaning as above.
