[A, pref.1 + Law = low, O.N. lāgr. Alawe, adv., is found as far back as King's Quair a.1423: “As I beheld, and kest myn eyen alawe,” and is prob. a Sc. rendering of Eng. alow. Cf. Montgomerie's belaw = below, The Cherrie and the Slae l. 321 (end of 16th cent.).]
