The word is known all along the coast from the Black Isle to Ferryden in Angus.Bnff. 1866 Gregor D.Bnff. 8:
Aivrin, . . . the larboard. In the deep-sea-fishing boats there are eight able-bodied fishermen, each of whom has his own seat in the boat. The skipper or captain holds the aivrin hank; the second man, the aivrin mid-ship; the third, the mid-aivrin boo; and the fourth, the foremast-aivrin boo. Each man receives the name of his seat.Ib., Addenda:
Aivrin, n., spell aivran. In some districts it is pronounced aifteran, that is, after-hand.
