Reput(e, v. Also: ru- and -putt-. P.t. and p.p. also reput(e, -puit(e, -putt. [Late ME and e.m.E. repute, p.t. and p.p. reputed, F. réputer (1294 in Godef.), L. reputāre.]In senses 1 and 2, common in the passive, freq. (esp. in 16th c.) in the legal or official formula to be repute and haldin (haldin and repute), for further instances of which see Hald v. 15.

1. tr. To consider, think or reckon (a person or thing) as being, or to be, something. Also reflex. a. With simple, phrase or clause compl.(1) c1400 Troy-bk. ii 714 (C).
